Striding into the new year of 2023, we are excited to share with you some of our key milestones in the past year and offer you some exciting outlook for the upcoming one.
Rollout of first passivation tool for lasers
As a forerunner in passivation technology, Comptek is happy to have finalized the design and built our first passivation tool optimized for edge-emitting lasers. Powered by our very own novel passivation technology, Kontrox, this turnkey solution for laser applications offers industry-leading cleaning solutions and underpins our expertise in engineering cutting-edge nanotechnology solutions targeted for III-V compound semiconductor devices.
We are gratified to see the new product has generated a lot of market interest worldwide and led to a host of exciting communications with our customers, including key players in the global semiconductor industry. We are already piloting the prototype tool geared for lasers in collaboration with several customers.
To extend the scope of Kontrox capabilities, during 2023, Comptek will leverage the recently awarded funding from the European Innovation Council in building a pilot line to apply Kontrox technology to 6” and 8” substrates. The target is to integrate Kontrox into existing manufacturing flows in combination with other common processing technologies such as ALD. This will enable us to produce full stack solutions and more advanced samples for customers within a real industrial-scale environment. This variant line will be utilized mainly for µLED and power electronic applications, where multiple customers have already expressed their interest and booked capacity for trial runs. Foreseeably, these activities will accelerate the development and implementation of Kontrox technology into production lines and facilitate the business scale-up.
Photonics West 2023 exhibition
In this connection, we are excited to be exhibiting in the upcoming Photonics West 2023 expo in San Francisco from 31 January to 2 February 2023, together with other corporate members of the Photonics Finland association.
We greatly look forward to connecting to key industry players to discuss our novel passivation solutions for edge emitting lasers, µLEDs and photodetectors, as well as exploring the current industry trends and developments in this world-class photonics research and technologies event.
Additionally, and as part of our fundraising campaign, we are especially honored to have been selected as one of the finalists pitching for the highly-esteemed Start-up Challenge on Monday, 31 January 2023.

New talent, new ambitions
As global demand for more power-efficient and reliable semiconductor devices sees an even bigger surge in 2022, Compek is well positioned than ever before to answer the market’s pressing needs for quality, performance and power efficiency for their devices.
In this regard, Comptek is all set to harness the exciting business prospects and opportunities ahead in broadening our global market entry roadmap. As we usher in a promising new year, we would like to extend a warm welcome to two new employees to strengthen our operations and support our business ambitions in global high-growth markets.
As Comptek’s new Marketing and Content specialist, Jaycee Lui-Conckova brings considerable experience in B-to-B and B-to-C marketing and communications from various industries in Europe and Asia. Together with her knowhow and insight in Asian business, she will serve as a key driver for the company’s strategic market entry efforts to tap into the burgeoning Chinese market.
In addition, we congratulate our veteran colleague, Juha-Pekka Lehtiö, on successfully completing his PhD studies at the University of Turku and rejoining the Comptek team at the start of the new year. Being one of Comptek’s pioneering employees, Juha-Pekka will be an instrumental force for our research and development team with the in-depth knowledge and expertise in Kontrox-related processes he will bring.
